Site map is a map of your all web pages on your web site, site map can be either in html or xml format but it's good to have both, one for user and one for google.
Site map in html - should be really simple web page with all the important links displayed that is easily to understand and navigate for user. When use gets to website and needs to find something fast they go to site map first which is the most easily to know all the content there is to navigate. When a search engine robots scans your web site from site map html page, it will easily find and index pages that's on your site map web page, but not all pages will be indexed, all of your web pages must meet requerments for google index system such as not having errors on your web page, and having more than 250 words per page, and many other factors.
Site map in xml - is only for submission to google and not for user, so then later on google will review it and index pages that are not indexed already. It may take up to a week for a review and submission, and sometimes longer. To create a xml file go to xml-sitemaps website, then in starting url text box enter your full web site url then click start button on the bottom, the wait till it finished generating xml file from your web site. Then in the blue box click on generated site map and save it to desktop. Next drag and drop xml file in dreamweaver Local Files with rest of your web pages, then in any web page or your site map type in any text then link it to xml file which will be named sitemap.xml. Then update your web site before submitting url to google. When updated open a brawser and go to your web site page url with text linked to xml file, then click on it and u'll see a code which is all your web pages in code view, then copy and paste that url in google webmaster central account, then submit.
If you don't have an account with google simly go to their google webmaster central web site and create an account using their simple instructions, it is free, usefull, and many webmasters use it because it have so many useful information.
